Kinderkookkafe

About Kinderkookkafe

Where children are in charge of the kitchen!

We felt we couldn’t let this Amsterdam child friendly cafe be missed out from our attractions page. In fact it is a small cafe that is most likely unknown to tourists. However, it is a wonderful spot to visit with young children and its concept is completely child based hence its name Kinderkookkafé, meaning “children’s cooking cafe”.

As its title suggests this cafe set on the edge of the Vondelpark in the heart of Amsterdam is a unique cafe where children cook and serve their own meals. As you enter the cafe you will notice that everything is set to child friendly heights and there is even a slide for children to use to get in! Children are encouraged to select which food they would like to cook from a picture menu which includes sausage rolls, pizzas and decorating cupcakes. Then with each item you choose to make is a simple set of photos showing your child which utensils they need to be able to make it. Everything they need is also in child size so they can be as independent as possible.

Then you simply choose a table and enjoy cooking. What our children really love is being able to take their creations to the kitchen by themselves to be cooked. They are met by a kind member of staff who pops it on to cook, then you can simply head outside to their own enclosed playground while the oven does its job. The playground area itself is loads of fun. It has a mud kitchen, sand pit and plenty of areas to climb, explore, hide and slide. In the outdoor area there are also children’s picnic benches as well as adult sized ones.

If you find yourself there on a less pleasant day then there are plenty of toys to keep them entertained indoors too.

The menu here is simple as it is aimed at children but parents need not be disappointed as a good old slice of cake or a tasty sandwich and a cup of coffee will go down a treat. You may even get chance to read a page or two of a book!!

There is no need to book in advance and the cafe is open daily.

If you wish to explore the marvellous Vondelpark after your cooking trip or to walk off some of the cake then almost opposite the Kinderkookkafé you will find a children’s large paddling pool and play area.

“Kids loved it”

Took my 3 young daughters here, they decorated their own cup cakes and really enjoyed it. Great value at less than 10 Euros for 3 Cupcakes and 2 coffees. When we asked them what they enjoyed most in Amsterdam that day they all said the Cupcake cafe!
