A toddler friendly resort in beautiful Friesland
Water, water, water! Landal Esonstad is located right at the top of the Netherlands in Friesland. It is next to the world heritage Wadden Islands and the Lauwersmeer National Park and is in one of the most scenically stunning areas of the country, close to endless beaches, dunes and lakes. This is a part of Holland which is slowly becoming more well known. Lonely Planet listed the Wadden Islands as number 3 in their top 10 places to visit in Europe in 2018 and it’s easy to see why.
Esonstad is a peaceful holiday park with traditional Dutch Friesan houses in the village centre and houses on the water. You can wake up to the tranquil sounds of water or stay more centrally in the fortified village. The houses are modern and spacious and the whole park has a luxurious, well kept feel to it. What we love is that the whole accommodation area is car free so its really safe for children to walk about and explore.
This is the perfect park for families with young children. There are lots of sandy play areas dotted around and a large indoor play area with slides, tunnels, plenty to climb on and even a play house. The Landal Bollo bear is also resident on this holiday park and many activities and entertainment are organised for children of all ages.
There is an indoor pool with a separate toddler pool and a sandy lake beach where little ones can build sand castles and splash around to their heart’s content.
The accommodations have all the mod cons including a well equipped kitchen but if you choose to eat out then there is a good choice of eateries on Landal Esonstad. You can choose between the brasserie, the pancake house or the snack bar. There is also a well stocked shop and a larger supermarket just a couple of kilometres away in Anjum.
A great thing to do here is rent bikes as it’s cyclists’ heaven in this region! They’re also handy to use to get around the park and you can rent a whole range of bikes including children’s bikes, bikes with child seats on the back, family bikes and even children’s pull along carts.
This is a brilliant choice of park if you fancy discovering something a bit different where luxury, nature and tradition are all rolled into one!
Esonstad has luxury accommodation modelled on traditional Dutch houses. You can choose from houses in the fortified village which is where the main hub of the park is with the pool, shop, bars and restaurants or houses on the water for a different experience.
You can choose houses with 2 bedrooms all the way up to 6 bedrooms!
Houses are spacious and have all the mod cons, well equipped kitchen, dishwasher, comfortable seating area, outside garden area and all have child safety features and baby equipment.
This is a car free zone with parking in a separate area.

“Fantastic for families”
This is a perfect place for families. Houses are well set up, really clean, with lots of space. There is plenty of activities to do on site and in the towns nearby. Swimming pool and play grounds/facilities are fantastic and will keep children entertained for hours !

Accommodation here all comes with cots, high chairs, stair gates and socket covers.
You can also book children’s themed houses which come with extra features such as toys and games, Little Tikes garden toys, child sized furniture and more. These houses all come with washing machines too and have fenced gardens. These are located in the central village area.
There is a lot to keep you busy at Esonstad but we’re sure you will want to venture out and explore too! Here are a few of the places you could visit:
Just 35 minutes away or 38km is the 2018 European capital of culture, Leeuwarden. Leeuwarden is a pretty town with harbours and cafe-lined squares. It also has the Aquazoo just outside of the centre.
45 minutes or 46km is the university town of Groningen where you can enjoy a delicious meal in the pancake ship!
The traditional Friesian seaside village of Lauwersoog (13km over the water) and the historic town of Dokkum 14km inland are worth a visit. Dokkum has ashops, cafes and a few larger supermarkets.
20 minutes inland is Sanjesfertier which is a large indoor and outdoor playground and a zoo!
40 minutes away is the Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen where wounded and sick seals and seal pups abandoned by their mums are taken to be cared for. Families with young children will love this!
A visit to this area wouldn’t be complete without a ferry trip to the island of Schiermonnikoog, the smallest of the Wadden Islands and just over the water from Esonstad. A 45 minute boat ride will take you to the island which was recently named “the most beautiful place in the Netherlands” where beaches stretch up to 1km in width!
