Maastricht, deep in the south of Holland, is yet another stunning medieval city in the Netherlands. And despite its quaint, cobbled streets – it is surprisingly easy to get around, even with buggies! The Dutch certainly don’t let a few bumps disrupt a family day out and neither should you; you definitely wouldn’t want to miss what Maastricht has in store!
Not only are there various walking tours to choose from, you can also opt for an exciting boat tour around the Maas and some of the canals. Kids will love watching how the bridges are opened and seeing how the skipper navigates the sometimes very tight corners! In the heart of the city, you will find the Stadspark (city park), where kids can feed the ducks while you enjoy a picnic near the playground. Alternatively, you can pop over to the Mergelhoof nature park which is especially great for toddlers. There are plenty of picnic tables, plus ground level trampolines, slides, swings, see-saws, sandpits and more!
Endless fun can also be had at Maastricht’s Natural History Museum. Here you can zip back in time to 350 million years ago, view dinosaur skeletons and even go underground into a flint mine! There are lots of different crafting activities for young children too, including building a bee hotel and making chestnut dolls.
If you fancy something tropical in the summer months then take a quick bus ride from the centre of Maastricht to Fun Valley in Eijsden. This recreational park caters to all ages but for very young children, you will want to head straight to Kids Valley where your little ones can run, crawl, climb, jump, skip, hop, roll and rock – you name it, they can do it here! Plenty of indoor and outdoor playground space, together with paddling pools and even its own ice-cream salon can be found here. If the mood takes you and you cannot peel the kiddies away, then why not opt for a BBQ package and keep the fun going into the early evening, there’s even the opportunity for Mums and Dads to do cocktail workshops!!
Maastricht is famous for its wonderful cafés, restaurants and beautiful terraces, where in the summer, table after table is keenly served by waiters that run around like bunnies! Take a break, pull up a pew, and relax to enjoy the many lovely dishes this town has to offer. Kids will love a plate of ‘poffetjes’, teeny-weeny pancakes loaded with butter and powdered sugar – a real treat! Mum and Dad can try a few of the local beers or a big slice of homemade apple pie – whatever tickles your fancy!
