Review: Our Winter Break to Hof van Saksen

The Garvey family have just returned from their 3rd Little Clogs holiday and have left us this review of the luxury Hof van Saksen Resort.

“Located near Groningen in the North of the Netherlands this luxury resort is great for the whole family whatever the weather. We spent a week here in January and were thoroughly entertained the whole time. I’d certainly recommend a stay here.

The highlights:

✅ Suitable for toddlers to teens;
✅ Great in all weathers;
✅ 2 to 12 bedroom farmhouses (baby and child friendly);
✅ Car free resort;
✅ Kids academies: crafts; railway; fashion; technology; sports; nature; adventure; cooking (each are age specific);
✅ Large indoor swimming pool with 4 super fast water slides and outdoor river rapids (so much fun!);
✅ Large indoor playground with soft play, bowling alley, climbing tower and trampoline hall (our 3 years old was entertained here for hours);
✅ Beach playground and recreation lake;
✅ Outdoor playgrounds;
✅ Mini golf;
✅ Bicycle hire;
✅ Spa and wellness centre;
✅ The hangout for older children;
✅ Free wi-fi throughout the resort;
✅ Babysitting service;
✅ Variety of dining options: 4 restaurants (including a buffet restaurant called “Al Fresco”); supermarket; take away pizza/tapas; or private chef in your farmhouse.

During our stay we also took the girls out in the car to explore the surrounding area. We visited:

🚣‍♀️ Giethoorn (55 min drive): Venice of the Netherlands. During our day here we took a 1 hour boat ride (prebooked online at Giethoorn.com), visited the local shops and ate lunch at Gracht of Giethoorn.

🦁 Wildlands Zoo, Emmen (30 min drive): a great day out with shows and performances throughout the day.

🏰 Groningen (30 min drive): the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. The almshouses trail and the child friendly aspects of the Forum kept the girls entertained.

🛍 Assen (15 min drive): a small town great for shopping. We popped here for lunch which I’d thoroughly recommend, they are very child friendly.
