Many thanks to the Barnes family for leaving us this fantastic review of Hof van Saksen. Having enjoyed a holiday at TerSpegelt last summer they were keen to find something equally suitable for their family and particularly for their son who has autism. They said:
“We stayed at Hof van Saksen for the last week of August as a family of 5, children aged 21, 14 and 11 (who is autistic). We booked a 3 bedroom cottage on the beach as we knew this would be a highlight and wanted to be able to go back and forth easily, which worked out really well.
We broke our journey from Calais with an overnight stay in Belgium and arrived at 4pm with an easy check in, due to using the App which allows you to enter all your data beforehand then use a digital key to access your accommodation. Driving in was quick, just a brief Hello to staff on the gate and we could park next to our cottage, which was really helpful.
The cottage was spacious and clean, with everything we needed and really comfy beds. We had our own shed too, which was perfect for storing our roof box! There is also a good amount of space around the cottage, which we liked and can be welcome when you have a child with additional needs, it felt quite private.
We brought our bikes (and a scooter) and used these straight away, as the site is nice and flat and safe to cycle around. It felt so good being able to cycle to the supermarket and be there in just a minute! The beach cottages are really close to the main building with the swimming pools and slides, shops and restaurants, we really thought they were in an excellent location overall.
We loved the pools and found them to be nicely heated, even the outdoor rapids were warm and lots of fun. Our older children really enjoyed the slides, but one go each was enough for me as they are pretty extreme! You can swim lengths in the pool too, plus there were pools for younger children, which were popular. The jacuzzis were busy but we used them a few times too.
The beach was so lovely and we spent most days here, digging, swimming and rowing our inflatable boat. My husband had a morning swim each day before breakfast which he loved. I took my coffee onto the sand each morning and enjoyed a quiet moment before it got busier, although it was never packed. Having the lake view from the house was really special and there were ducks and rabbits around which we saw every day.
With so many activities on offer it was hard to get through everything! We tried the kayaks and paddleboards, technology academy, mini Land Rovers, mini golf, trampolining and soft play. Everything was well organised and easy to book via the App, if needed.
We used the supermarket for fresh croissants, milk etc, but there is a Lidl nearby where we did a proper shop. We ate in the Al Fresco and Italian restaurants and used the take away, all were great quality and were spacious. Our autistic son can get overwhelmed in busy restaurants, but the tables were well placed and there were plainer options he could eat – we had asked about this at Reception and they couldn’t have been more helpful.
All staff were incredibly friendly and polite and we found the level of customer service was excellent – we had a couple of issues with the cottage and they were fixed within the hour.
We cycled around the beautiful local area, visiting towns and forest areas, this was very easy and safe. Wildlands Adventure Zoo in Emmen is a brilliant day out, which we did on our cloudy weather day, lots of fun activities including a safari bus and boat ride!
Overall we found this a great choice for all ages and everyone enjoyed themselves. The park is beautifully maintained and spacious enough to not feel too busy or overwhelming. You get a great beach style holiday with tonnes of activities and a fab pool and waterpark, we can’t imagine a better setting – Hof Van Saksen will be a hard one to beat!
